Game Log - 2008
4-13-08 Bridgeport Orators 1864 W 18-12
1864 L 12-9
Atlantic opened its 2008 season across the Sound, at Seaside Park in Bridgeport, Conn., against the vastly improved Orators.  Atlantic took the first game 12-8.  Although they never relinquished the lead, Atlantic found itself in a hard fought contest all the way.  TC, Dream, Flash, and Hammy each had 4 hits to lead Atlantic to victory.  Pigtail pitched the distance for the win.  The second contest went back and forth, the lead constantly changing hands, until the Orators surged ahead with 5 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to take the lead for good, holding Atlantic down for the 12-9 victory.  Toothpick and Lip led Atlantic with 3 hits apiece, while Flash, Shorty, Hammy, and Tricky Rick each contributed 2 hits.
4-20-08 Waterbury Connors 1864 L 13-11
1864 L 12-10
Atlantic opened its home season in a most unusual way, dropping both ends of a doubleheader.  Atlantic hosted the Waterbury Connors, and in two closely-fought seesaw battles, the Connors managed to best Atlantic, both times by just 2 runs.  Atlantic lost the first contest, 13-11.  Dream had 3 hits for Atlantic, and Flash, TC, Butcher, and Billy Goat each collected 2 hits.  The second contest was lost by a score of 12-10.  Billy Goat led Atlantic with 3 hits, and Hammy had 2 hits.
4-26-08 Roxbury Nine   1864 L 14-13
1898 L 19-13
Atlantic again faced one of its toughest opponents, the Roxbury Nine, and once more suffered a double defeat.  The first game, an 1864 contest, seesawed back and forth all the way.  Atlantic came to bat in the 9th inning trailing by 2 runs, and after 2 quick outs, suddenly had a run in, the tying run on third, and the go-ahead run on second, but a screaming liner hit the turf and bounced right up to the secondbaseman for the bound out, and the victory, 14-13.  Shakespeare and Dream had 3 hits apiece, and TC and Shorty had 2 hits each for Atlantic.  Atlantic again took an early lead in the second game, an 1898 contest, but Roxbury quickly put together a 10-run 3rd inning to surge ahead, 12-4.  Atlantic finally came to life in the 7th inning, scoring 6 times, but again fell short, this time 19-13.  Dream, Wildhorse, and Shorty each collected 2 hits for Atlantic.

Elkton Eclipse 1864 W 13-2
5-18-08 Waterbury Connors 1864 L 11-6
Atlantic's quest to defend its two year reign as Gotham Cup Champions looked good on Saturday as they swept their first two preliminary round games, putting away the Waterbury Connors, 16-5, and then the Elkton Eclipse, 13-2.  In the first game, Atlantic put on a defensive display, highlighted by a back-handed one-handed catch of a sizzling line drive by Atlantic second baseman Hawk.  Toothpick and Billy Goat led the Atlantic offensive attack with 3 hits apiece.  Hawk, Dreambucket, Shakespeare, Hammy, and Wildhorse each had 2 hits.  Pigtail stymied the Connor bats for the victory.  In the second game, Hawk took to between-the-lines, holding Eclipse to 2 runs to pick up the victory.  Shakespeare led the way with 3 more hits, while Toothpick, TC, Dreambucket, Billy Goat, and Hawk each contributed 2 hits.  Onward to Sunday's second round. #1 seeded Atlantic was pitted against #4 seeded Waterbury, while #2 seeded Talbot would face #3 seeded Gotham.  This day, Waterbury exacted their revenge for their previous day's loss, and held off Atlantic 11-6, to earn a berth in the Championship game against Talbot.  Dreambucket had 2 singles and a double for Atlantic.  Flash, Hawk, and Hammy contributed 2 hits each.
5-25-08 Newark Eurekas 1864 W 16-5
1864 W 12-6
Atlantic made its first trip to Riverbank Park in Newark, NJ, home of the first-year team Eurekas, whose original team actually played against the original Atlantics in the 1860's.  Atlantic beat Eureka once in 1864, twice in 1865, twice in 1866 with a loss to them, once in 1868, and twice in 2008.  In the first game, Atlantic bested Eureka 16-5.  Flash had 2 doubles among his 4 hits, while Hawk and Toothpick each had 3 hits.  TC, Hammy, Willy Mo, and Laces each contributed 2 hits, as Pigtail picked up the victory.  In the second game, Atlantic again prevailed, this time 12-6.  Dreambucket led the attack with 3 hits, Butcher had a home run and a double, and Toothpick and Flash also had 2 hits.  Hawk pitched for the Atlantic win.  On the day, on the offense side, Flash banged out 4 doubles off the fence, and on the defense side, Willy Mo accounted for more than half the recorded outs at third base for Atlantic.
5-31-08 Providence Grays 1884 L 10-5
1864 W 7-2
Atlantic ventured to Narragansett, Rhode Island, to take on another tough opponent, the Providence Grays, our longest running rivalry.  The Atlantic and Gray clubs have been playing each other since 1998, on an even scale, and this day would be no different, as they again split the pair of games.  Gray won the first match, an 1884 contest, 10-5, and Atlantic took the 1864 match, 7-2.  The first game remained close throughout, until the Grays scored 4 times in the top half of the 9th inning to take a commanding 10-5 lead, then held Atlantic scoreless to secure the victory.  Toothpick had 3 hits for Atlantic and Hawk had 2 hits and a walk.  Providence pretty much held the other Atlantic bats quiet.  In the second game, after giving up a first inning run, Atlantic scored 4 runs in their half of the 1st and never looked back.  Atlantic only gave up another single run in the 3rd, and played solid defense the entire game.  Toothpick again led Atlantic with 3 more hits, while Dreambucket had a single and a triple.  Tree pitched the distance to gain his first victory of the season.
6-7-08 Navesink Sidewheelers 1864 W 14-10
Potomac BBC 1864 W 9-0
6-8-08 Elkton Eclipse 1864 W 16-13
Talbot Fairplays 1864 W 10-6
The 2nd Annual Washington, D.C. tournament was moved up to the beginning of June to avoid the July heat.  Atlantic arrived this weekend to find the temperatures topping 100?, but Atlantic was just as hot, as it swept all its games: 14-10 over the Navesink Sidewheelers, 9-0 forfeit over the Potomac BBC, 16-13 over the Elkton Eclipse, and 10-6 over the Talbot Fair Plays.  In Saturday's game, Navesink kept forging ahead with Atlantic answering back, until finally Atlantic surged ahead and then shut down the Sidewheelers.  Shakespeare went 4 for 4, scoring 3 aces, while TC went 3 for 3 with 3 aces.  Hawk, Dreambucket, and Pigtail each had 2 hits.  Pigtail and Hawk combined to shut down Navesink, with Hawk pitching the final 4 innings in relief to pick up the victory.  On Sunday, Atlantic and Eclipse matched runs until Atlantic scored 3 in the 8th and 5 in the 9th to secure the victory.  Dreambucket had 3 doubles and a home run while TC had 2 singles, a double, and a triple, to lead Atlantic.  Flash and Butcher each had 3 hits, and Toothpick contributed 2 hits.  Pigtail went the distance for the victory.  In Sunday's second game, Atlantic allowed Talbot 6 runs in the first 3 innings, then whitewashed them the rest of the way for their third win.  Dreambucket (triple, home run, 3 aces) and Toothpick (triple, 3 aces) led Atlantic with 4 hits apiece.  Tricky Rick added 2 hits to the Atlantic attack.  Lip started between the lines, and after giving up 4 runs in a shaky first inning, was relieved by Pigtail, who finished the game for the Atlantic victory.
6-14-08 New York Gotham 1864 W 28-17
Flemington Neshanock 1864 W 9-2
Saturday, June 14, was a perfect day for base ball at Atlantic Park.  Gotham and Neshanock were both on hand to help Atlantic celebrate 'Old Dutch' Day, by remembering how important 'Old Dutch' was to vintage base ball, and to enjoy the game as it was meant to be played.  The first game between Atlantic and Gotham was a slugfest, standing 19-17 after 6 innings.  Atlantic then scored 1 in the 7th, 2 in the 8th, and 6 in the 9th while holding Gotham scoreless to secure a 28-17 victory.  Dreambucket (2 triples, home run, 4 aces), Toothpick (double, home run, 3 aces), and Flash (2 triples) each had 4 hits for Atlantic.  TC and Shakespeare had 3 hits and 3 aces apiece.  Pigtail picked up the win in relief.  In the second game, both Atlantic and Neshanock played good defense, with Atlantic prevailing, 9-2.  Toothpick continued his hitting rampage with 3 more hits, giving him 13 hits in 18 at bats over his last 4 games for Atlantic.   Flash and Willy Mo contributed 2 hits each.  Tree pitched the distance to pick up the win.  In the third game, Neshanock and Gotham battled evenly the first half of the game before Neshanock took charge and claimed the victory, 12-6.
6-29-08 Waterbury Connors 1864 L 5-4, 10 innings
Essex Base Ball Club 1864 W 12-4
Atlantic traveled up to Waterbury, Conn., to take on two of the tougher northeastern teams, the Waterbury Connors and the Essex Base Ball Club.  In the first game, Connor and Atlantic each scored single runs in both the 1st and 3rd innings.  Connor scored another run in their 6th, and Atlantic came back with one run in their 8th.  The game stood tied, 3-3, after 9 innings.  Connor then scored 2 runs in the top of the 10th.  Atlantic tried to answer scoring once and putting the tying run on 2nd base, but fell short, 5-4, in a game featuring many defensive gems by both teams.  TC, Shakespeare, Dreambucket, and Pigtail each had 2 hits for Atlantic.  In the second game, Atlantic took a little bit more charge of the game at bat, including an explosive 8-run 7th inning to cap the 12-4 victory over Essex.  Butcher, Hammy, and Pigtail each had 2 hits for Atlantic.  Tree pitched the distance to pick up the victory.
7-12-08 New York Mutuals 1864 W 15-4
1864 W 12-7
Last Sunday, Atlantic hosted the New York Mutuals in the first ever meeting between the neighboring clubs. The Mutuals opened the game with a bang, scoring twice in the top of the first inning, but Brooklyn bounced back with 3 aces of their own in the bottom half. For the next few innings, both teams played excellent defense, with Atlantic holding a 6-4 lead entering the bottom of the 7th. It was then that the Mutuals succumbed to the dreaded ?Westbury Inning,? allowing Brooklyn to score 9 aces en route to a 15-4 victory. Goat led Atlantic with 3 hits, and Hawk (2 doubles) and TC (triple) each contributed two, as Tree earned the complete game win. The second match brought even more first inning scoring than the previous game, with both clubs tallying 5 runs in the frame. Brooklyn also scored 5 times in the 3rd inning, and twice in the 4th, to win 12-7 in the abbreviated 5 inning contest. Toothpick (triple) had 3 hits, with Dream (double), Flash (double, home run), Hammy (double), and Shakespeare all hitting safely twice. Hawk and Tree shared time between the lines, with Hawk picking up the victory.
7-20-08 Providence Grays 1864 W 20-5
1884 W 17-11
Atlantic hosted their oldest rival, the Providence Grays, for a pair of games on this glorious and warm Sunday.  Both teams were missing some key players, but Atlantic had the better edge making up for it as they managed to both outhit and outfield the Grays to take both ends of the doubleheader, 20-5 and 17-11.  In the first contest, an 1864 game, Atlantic scored in every inning to overpower the Grays.  Dreambucket (double, home run, 2 walks, 4 aces), Willy Mo, and Shakespeare (double, 2 aces) led Atlantic with 4 hits each.  TC (double, 3 aces), Toothpick (triple), and Butcher (triple, 2 aces) had 3 hits apiece.  Hawk also had a home run for Atlantic.  Pigtail pitched the distance for the win.  In the second contest, Atlantic jumped ahead early to cruise to a 17-11 victory in the overhand 1884 game.  Dreambucket again led Atlantic with 4 more hits, including a double, with 4 aces.  Toothpick (home run, 2 aces), Willy Mo (2 aces), Shakespeare (2 aces), Hawk (2 doubles), Butcher (triple, 2 aces), and TC (triple) all had 3 hits apiece.  On the day, Tricky Rick reached base 8 times, scoring 5 aces.  Shakespeare picked up his first win of the year with his complete game performance.
7-27-08 Bridgeport Orators 1864 W 16-10
1864 W 9-4
The Bridgeport Orators returned to Atlantic Park this week.  The previous Atlantic-Orator meeting resulted in a split of the games.  This time, Atlantic was able to hold off the Orators in both games to gain a sweep of the doubleheader, 16-10 and 9-4.  We also managed to play around the thunderstorms, staying dry until the 8th inning of the first game.  After waiting out the storm, the second game was played, this time concluding just minutes before the next downpour.  In the first contest, Atlantic scored 9 runs in the first 2 innings to take a commanding lead.  Then, when the Orators attempted a comeback, drawing within 2 runs at 10-8, Atlantic connected with 7 big hits to score 6 runs in the 9th to put the game away.  Hawk, Dreambucket, and Billy Goat had 3 hits each to lead Atlantic.  Pigtail pitched for the win.  In the second contest, Atlantic struck early again, scoring 7 runs over the first 3 innings to take control of the game.  Toothpick had 3 hits, and TC and Flash had 2 hits each for Atlantic.  Tree went the distance to pick up the victory.

Olneyville Temperance Cadets 1864 W 14-1
Atlantic traveled the short distance to participate in the annual OBVR games.  Matched up against two strong teams, Atlantic brought their 'A' game to first hand the Waterbury Connors a brutal 23-6 defeat, and then best the Olneyville Temperance Cadets 14-1.  Atlantic jumped out ahead with 5 runs in the first inning against the Connors and never looked back.  Dreambucket and Toothpick both went 4 for 4 to lead Atlantic.  Hawk, Wildhorse, and Nice&Easy each had 2 hits, as Pigtail held Waterbury down for the victory.  In the second game, Shakespeare pitched a fine game, limiting the Cadets to a single 9th inning run to gain his first underhand victory.  TC had 3 hits for Atlantic, and Hawk, Flash, Shakespeare, Wildhorse, and Butcher contributed 2 hits apiece.  Dreambucket connected for his 5th home run of the season for Atlantic.

Atlantic set off for Rochester, site of the Genesee Country Village Silver Ball Tournament.  Fourteen teams would play 4 games each, and the top two would then meet in a Championship game.  Atlantic played its first game Saturday morning against the Woodstock Actives, a team that stood 1-0 over Atlantic.  This time Atlantic played its heralded defense, holding Active to two 4th inning runs, and defeated them, 7-2.  TC, Dreambucket, Flash, and Hammy each had 3 hits for Atlantic.  Tree whitewashed Active 8 of the 9 innings for the victory.  At noon, Atlantic faced the Excelsiors, a team we had previously played once and ended with a tie.  This time, Atlantic scored 4 in the first, but Excelsior got back 2 runs.  Atlantic scored 1 in the 3rd, but Excelsior scored 3 to gain a tie at 5-5.  Atlantic scored 4 more runs and held Excelsior to none the rest of the way for the 9-5 victory.  Toothpick, Dreambucket, Tree, and Pigtail each had 3 hits for Atlantic.  Pigtail gave up the early runs, then settled down to whitewash Excelsior the last 6 innings for the victory.  After a break, Atlantic faced their third opponent, Live Oak, which proved to be no match this day, as Atlantic ran all over them, 24-1.  Dreambucket and Pigtail had 4 hits each, and Flash, Hawk, and Butcher had 3 hits apiece.  Tree pitched another fine game, with 8 more whitewashes, for the victory.  At the end of the day, 4 teams stood at 3-0, and would face each other Sunday morning for the right to go to the Championship game.  Atlantic faced the Akron Black Stockings, defending Silver Ball Champions from the past two years.  In a closely fought contest, Atlantic came out on top, 12-9.  Toothpick went 4 for 5 to lead Atlantic, while Flash, Hawk, and Tree each had 3 hits.  Pigtail went the distance, holding Akron to just 1 run over the final 3 innings to secure the victory.  In the other contest, the Knickerbockers took the victory over Kent.  That left Atlantic and the Knickerbockers as the only undefeated teams left, ready to face off for the Silver Ball Championship later that day.  The Knickerbockers came to the game ready to play, scoring in each of the first 7 innings, while Atlantic appeared listless, unable to stop them or to offer an offensive attack of their own.  The Knickerbockers outplayed Atlantic, and deservedly won the Silver Ball Championship, 16-6.  For Atlantic, Dreambucket had 3 hits while Toothpick, Hawk, Butcher, Tuna, and Pigtail each had 2 hits.
8-17-08 New York Gothams 1864 W 16-6
1864 W 17-11

8-31-08 1864 L 11-6
Atlantic travelled upstate to Roxbury for the annual Keator Cup Tournament, ready to defend its four-time championship reign.  This year there would be only two 1864 teams playing, with no Keator Cup on the line, but that didn't stop Atlantic from playing its game before the weekend's crowds.  In the first Saturday game, Atlantic scored 6 runs in the 4th inning and 5 runs in the 6th inning on its way to a 17-2 victory against the Mixed Nines.  Flash led Atlantic with a 4 for 4 game, including a double, a triple, and 3 aces.  Dreambucket (2 doubles, triple, 4 aces), Hawk, and Hammy each had 3 hits.  Tree held the Mixed Nine to 2 runs for the victory.  In the second game, Atlantic again scored 6 runs in the 4th inning and 5 runs in the 6th inning to take the 15-6 victory.  Dreambucket (2 doubles, triple, 3 aces), Shakespeare (double, 3 aces), and Bankroll each went 3 for 3, while Toothpick and Hammy each had 2 hits.  Hawk started for Atlantic and picked up the win.  On Sunday, Atlantic scored early, but there were no big 4th or 6th innings to propel them to victory, as they fizzled, scoring only 1 run over the last 6 innings, falling to the Mixed Nine by an 11-6 score.  Toothpick went 3 for 3, with a double, a triple, and 3 aces, and Shakespeare had 2 hits for Atlantic, but the rest of the team went a combined 7 for 32, as Atlantic lost for only the second time in their past 21 games.

10-4-08 New York Gothams 1864 W 12-6
1864 L 12-6
Atlantic took on the Gothams at Juniper Valley Park in Queens on a day that started out sunny and bright.  Some sprinkles started to fall between games, maybe an omen for Atlantic of what was to come.  The teams traded 12-6 victories in two close hard-fought contests.  Atlantic took the opener, scoring early to build up an 11-3 lead over the first five innings, and then cruising to the finish.  Dreambucket, with a single, double, walk, 3 aces, and Willy Mo, with 2 singles and 2 aces, led Atlantic to the victory.  Pigtail pitched the first 6 innings for the win, Nice&Easy held off Gotham the final 3 innings.  In the second game, Gotham scored 7 runs in the first 2 innings, and Atlantic never caught up.  Butcher, with a single, double, walk, 3 aces, and Dreambucket, with 2 singles and 2 aces, led Atlantic.  Flash also had a double for Atlantic.
10-11-08   Bridgeport Orators 1861 W 9-5
1861 W 5-4
Atlantic travelled back to Seaside Park in Bridgeport one final time this season to take on the Orators.  Both teams played superb defense in both games, as there were 25 whitewashes, with scoring in only 10 of the 35 half-innings.  In the first game, Atlantic scored 5 runs in the first inning, 2 in the 2nd, and 2 in the 8th to take the 9-5 victory.  Toothpick, Flash, Hawk, Butcher, and Dreambucket had the key hits in scoring those runs.  Pigtail held Bridgeport in check to gain the victory.  In the second game, Atlantic again scored early with 2 runs in the 1st inning, but were whitewashed for the next 6 innings by the Bridgeport defense.  Meanwhile, the Orators scored 3 in the 2nd, and 1 in the 6th to hold a 4-2 lead after 7 1/2 innings.  Toothpick and Flash led off the bottom of the 8th with singles, and Atlantic pushed across 3 runs to take a 5-4 lead, then held Bridgeport scoreless in the 9th for the victory.  Pigtail again went the distance for the win.
10-18-08 Flemington Neshanock 1864 W 29-10
Elkton Eclipse 1864 W 17-5
Atlantic headed out to Elkton, Maryland, for the League Championship series.  Atlantic would face Flemington in the first round, and hopefully move on to the finals. Flemington jumped on the travel-weary Atlantics early, taking a 5-2 lead into the third inning, but then Atlantic settled into their game, using their powerful offense to score 27 more runs, and their stellar defense to hold down Neshanock, 29-10.  Toothpick (triple, 3 aces) and Shakespeare (double, 4 aces) each had 4 hits for Atlantic, while Dreambucket added 3 hits, including his team-leading 7th home run of the season.  Flash also homered, and Money and Pigtail added doubles for Atlantic.  Pigtail picked up the victory.  That set up Atlantic to face host team Elkton in the final.  Once again, Atlantic fell behind early, and once again Atlantic put their offense in gear and picked up their defense to come away with a 17-5 victory.  Dreambucket and Willy Mo led Atlantic with 3 hits apiece.  Butcher, Flash (double), Shakespeare, Hawk (2 doubles), Money, Tuna, and Pigtail (double) all contributed 2 hits for Atlantic.  Shakespeare went the distance for the victory.
